Shortcut alternatives for small teams
Pick devBoard if you want something smaller, with a timer on each task and a workspace per client. Pick Linear for a fast tracker with sprints, YouTrack for free time tracking, and Jira if you are growing fast. Stay on Shortcut if its sprints and roadmap already work for you. We make devBoard. It is first on the list. We say where the others are better.
Why small teams leave Shortcut
Shortcut, once called Clubhouse, is built for software teams, and it is well liked. A story is its name for a task. An epic is a big piece of work split into smaller tasks. Stories roll up into epics, with sprints and reports on top.
We found one clear source on why teams leave. An IdeaPlan write-up says it feels slower than newer tools like Linear.
Other reasons come from what it leaves out. The vendor's own AI info page says it has no native time tracking. We could not confirm a current phone app. And the free plan has one workspace, which is tight for a freelancer with several clients.

| Tool | Pick it if | The catch | Built-in time tracking | Apps | Price as of October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| devBoard | You want less tool, a timer and a workspace per client | No web version, no importer, no sprints | Yes, on tasks and subtasks | iPhone, Android, Mac. Windows and Linux are coming. | Free while in early access; paid plans will be one plain number, posted here first. |
| Linear | You want a fast tracker with sprints | No timer | No | Web, Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android | Free up to 250 issues. Basic is $10 per user a month, billed yearly. |

devBoard
devBoard is smaller than Shortcut, on purpose. It has a board, epics, tasks, subtasks, releases and a timer. A subtask is a small step inside a task. It has no sprints and no roadmap.
Pick it if
- You want a timer on each task. Press Start, then Stop. Forgot it? Log the minutes for today. The total sits next to the estimate.
- You work for clients. Ana is a freelancer with three clients: a bakery app, a hotel site and a clinic booking app. Each gets its own workspace. A guest can see it but cannot change anything or comment.
- You ship in releases, not sprints. A release is a named group of tasks with a target date.
- You want apps. devBoard is on the App Store for iPhone and Mac, and on Google Play for Android.
Skip it if
- You run sprints. devBoard has releases instead.
- You want a web version. There is none, on purpose.
- You want your stories copied over. There is no importer.
- You want docs or chat. devBoard has neither, and Shortcut has docs.
- You want automations. There are none.
- You are on Windows or Linux. Those apps are not out yet.
Linear
Linear is the closest swap for a Shortcut team. Cycles are its repeating sprints.
Pick it if
- You want speed. That write-up names Linear as faster.
- You want to bring your stories. Linear has a Shortcut importer.
- You want native phone apps, plus apps for Mac and Windows.
Skip it if
- You bill by the hour. Linear has no built-in time tracking. Estimates are points, not hours.
- You want your own way of working. One reviewer on Capterra said setup took a couple of weeks, because Linear has firm views on workflow.
- You use Linux. Linear lists no Linux app.
YouTrack
YouTrack is the JetBrains tracker for dev teams. Time tracking, a knowledge base and a helpdesk are built in.
Pick it if
- You want time tracking without paying. It is on the free plan.
- You want to host it yourself. YouTrack Server runs on your own machine.
- You want sprints and a Gantt chart in one tool.
Skip it if
- You want a desktop app. JetBrains lists web and phone apps only.
- You want few settings. YouTrack can be shaped many ways, and someone has to do it.
Jira
Jira is the Atlassian tracker for software teams. It fits ten people or more, with someone to run the setup.
Pick it if
- You are growing. Jira has workflows you can shape, sprints, timelines and reports.
- You want room above epics. Premium can add levels above them.
- You want phone apps for iPhone and Android.
Skip it if
- You are a few people. A Capterra reviewer said it slows a five-person team, and the setup needs an owner.
- You want a timer. Jira logs work by hand, and timers usually come from paid add-ons such as Tempo.
Who should stay on Shortcut
Shortcut does a lot well. Stay if these matter most:
- You run sprints. Shortcut has them, plus velocity and burndown reports. The Reports page needs a paid plan.
- You plan with a roadmap of epics and objectives.
- You want docs next to your stories, on every plan.
- You use an AI assistant. MCP is the open standard that lets an assistant use other tools. Shortcut's official MCP server is on every plan, Free included.
- You are a startup under 50 people or a non-profit. Startups get a year free, and qualifying non-profits pay nothing.
How we chose
We make devBoard, so we are biased, and we put it first. We picked trackers for software work that fix at least one thing Shortcut lacks: a timer, phone apps or a smaller model. We read each pricing page on 9 October 2026, and left out what we could not confirm. Every tool here has an official MCP server, so that did not decide anything. Our other alternatives pages cover more tools.
Moving off Shortcut
Linear has a Shortcut importer. Jira takes CSV files, and YouTrack runs custom import scripts. We found no direct Shortcut importer in either of them.
devBoard has no importer, so you move the open work in by hand. Create epics, tasks and subtasks for what is in flight. Keep the history where it is.
Questions people ask
Is Shortcut the same as Clubhouse?
Yes. Shortcut used to be called Clubhouse. It is the same tracker under a new name.
Does Shortcut have time tracking?
No. Its own AI info page says there is no native time tracking. Teams add a separate tool such as Harvest or Everhour.
Is there a Shortcut mobile app?
An iOS app was announced back when it was called Clubhouse. We could not find a current one in the App Store or Google Play in October 2026.
What is the best Shortcut alternative for a small team?
For speed and sprints, Linear. For a timer and a workspace per client, devBoard, which we make. For free time tracking, YouTrack.
