YouTrack alternatives for small teams
Pick devBoard if you want a board, a timer on each task and an app on your phone and Mac. Pick Linear or Shortcut for fast issue tracking with sprints, if you track time somewhere else. Pick Jira if you need more control than YouTrack gives you, not less. We make devBoard. It is first on the list. We say where the others are better.
Why small teams leave YouTrack
YouTrack is a well-liked tool from JetBrains. Agile boards, a Gantt chart, a knowledge base, a helpdesk and time tracking are all built in. The free plan covers small teams, time tracking included.
The one real reason to leave is the size of it. Each feature comes with settings, and someone has to learn them. Reviews on G2 point to a steep learning curve and a query language. We could only read those in search results, so take them as a hint. A three-star App Store review from July 2025 calls the phone app clunky and far behind the web version.
Our post on big trackers and small teams says where setup time goes.

devBoard
Pick it if
- You want time on the task. Press Start on a task or subtask, and Stop when you are done. The total shows next to the estimate. More on time tracking.
- You want three levels of work and no more. An epic is a big piece of work split into smaller tasks. A subtask is one small step inside a task.
- You plan by release, not by sprint. A release is a version of your app that goes out on a date.
- You want an app on your phone and Mac. It opens at once with your workspace outline and My Work list, even with no signal.
Skip it if
- You need a web version. devBoard is an app only.
- You want to bring your YouTrack issues over in one go. There is no importer.
- You keep a knowledge base or a helpdesk next to your issues. devBoard has no docs or chat.
- You rely on rules that run on their own. There are no automations.
- Someone on your team is on Windows or Linux. Those apps are not out yet.
Linear
Pick it if
- You want a fast tracker made for software teams, with little to set up.
- You plan in cycles. A cycle is Linear's name for a sprint that repeats.
- You want apps in many places. Linear runs in the browser and on Mac and Windows. Its phone apps are native.
Skip it if
- You track time. Linear has none built in, and its estimates are points, not hours. A browser add-on such as Harvest adds a timer.
- You left YouTrack to set up less. One Capterra reviewer says setup took a couple of weeks, because of its fixed way of working.
Our devBoard vs Linear page goes into more detail.
Jira
Pick it if
- You need more control, not less. Jira has custom workflows, reports and dashboards. Automations are on every plan.
- You want an importer. Jira lists YouTrack as a source it can import from.
- Your team will grow past ten people. Jira pays off at that size.
Skip it if
- You left YouTrack to set up less. A Capterra review from September 2026 says Jira slows a five-person team, and its setup needs an owner.
- You want a timer. Jira logs work by hand, and an admin has to turn that on. Timers come from paid add-ons such as Tempo.
- You want a desktop app. Atlassian closed its Mac app.
- You host YouTrack yourself. Atlassian stopped selling Jira Data Center to new customers in March 2026.
See devBoard vs Jira for the two side by side.
Shortcut
Pick it if
- You want stories, epics and sprints, without Jira's setup. Shortcut calls its sprints iterations.
- You want docs next to your work. Docs are on every plan.
- You are a young startup. Startups with fewer than 50 staff can get a year free.
Skip it if
- You track time. Shortcut's own pages say it has no native time tracking.
- You want apps. We found no desktop app, and we could not confirm a current phone app.
- You want speed above all. An alternatives page from IdeaPlan says teams leave because it feels slower than newer tools like Linear.
We also keep a list of Shortcut alternatives.
Who should stay on YouTrack
- You use its time tracking every day, with timesheets and reports. devBoard has a timer, but no timesheet screen.
- You host it yourself. YouTrack Server runs on your own machine. None of the tools on this list offers that to a new customer.
- You run a helpdesk or a knowledge base in the same place as your issues.
How we chose
We make devBoard, so we put it first. That is a bias. We picked tools a small dev team could move to in a week. Each one is hosted for you, has a board and a way to group work, and costs nothing to start. We checked built-in time tracking, since YouTrack has it. We read each pricing page on 9 October 2026. Every page in our alternatives section works this way.
Moving off YouTrack
devBoard has no importer, so you move open work by hand. Leave closed issues in YouTrack as your record. Make an epic for each big piece of work, then add its tasks. The guide to epics, tasks and subtasks shows how in about five minutes.
Of the others, Jira lists YouTrack on its import page. Linear's import page does not. Shortcut imports from Jira and Trello, and takes CSV files for other tools. Keep your YouTrack account until you have the time reports you need.
Questions people ask
Is there a YouTrack alternative with free time tracking?
devBoard has a timer on every task and is free while in early access. Linear and Shortcut have free plans, but no time tracking. Jira lets you log work by hand, with no timer. We could not confirm which Jira plans include it.
Can I import my YouTrack issues into Linear?
Not directly, as far as we can tell. Linear's import page lists Jira, GitHub Issues, Asana and Shortcut. Jira does list YouTrack as a source.
What can I host myself instead of YouTrack?
None of the tools on this list. Jira stopped selling its self-hosted edition to new customers in March 2026. Plane is open source and can run on your own server. See our Plane alternatives.
Is YouTrack too much for a team of three?
It can be, if all you use is the board. If you use its time tracking or helpdesk, it is likely worth keeping. It is free for small teams.
Free while in early access; paid plans will be one plain number, posted here first.
