Connect devBoard to Cursor
When you finish, Cursor's agent can read your devBoard tasks, comment, move cards and track your time. It takes about three minutes.
MCP is the open standard that lets an AI assistant use other tools. devBoard is an MCP server. Cursor is the client.
What you need
- devBoard on a Mac, signed in. Tokens are made in the Mac app only.
- The workspace you want to connect, open in the app.
- Your role is member, admin or owner. A guest cannot make a token.
- Cursor installed.
Steps
1. Open the right workspace
A token belongs to the workspace that is open when you make it. If you have several, switch first.
2. Make a token
Go to Settings → Developer. Click New token. Name it "Cursor".
3. Copy the token
It is shown once. After that you only see its first few characters.
4. Create or open mcp.json
For all projects, use ~/.cursor/mcp.json. For one project, use .cursor/mcp.json inside that project. Create the file if it is not there.
5. Add the devBoard server
Paste this in. Put your token in place of <your-token>:
{
"mcpServers": {
"devboard": {
"url": "https://api.getdevboard.app/mcp",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer <your-token>" }
}
}
}
If the file already has other servers, add devboard next to them inside mcpServers.
6. Turn it on in Cursor
Open Cursor Settings → MCP. You should see devboard with a green dot and a list of tools. If the dot is not green, click the refresh icon.
7. Ask something
Open the agent chat and type: "What's on my plate today?" Cursor calls the my_work tool and lists your tasks.
Check that it works
If step 7 lists your tasks, you are done. If Cursor answers without calling a tool, say "use the devboard tools" once. Agent mode must be on.
What to try next
- "Start APP-42." Cursor assigns you, moves the card to In progress, starts your timer and gives you a branch name.
- "File a bug: the login button does nothing on iPad. Urgent, assign it to me."
- "Comment on APP-42 that the fix is in review."
- "Done with APP-42, move it to Done."
If it does not work
| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Red dot next to devboard | The file has a typo or the token is wrong | Check the JSON, then make a new token |
| No tools listed | Cursor has not refreshed | Click refresh in Settings → MCP, or restart Cursor |
| No Developer section in Settings | You are on a phone or iPad | Use the Mac app |
| Cursor sees the wrong projects | The token is for another workspace | Make a token in the right workspace |
| Several clients | One token covers one workspace | Use a project-level file per client, each with its own token |
Keep the token safe
A token acts as you, with your role. It cannot delete items or manage members. The file is plain text, so do not commit it to git. If it leaks, revoke it in Settings → Developer. It stops working at once. More on the MCP page.
Questions people ask
Should the file go in my home folder or in the project?
Home folder for all projects. Project folder for one project. If you work with several clients, put a file in each client's project with that client's token.
Is the token safe in mcp.json?
It is a plain text file, so treat it like a password. Do not commit it. Add .cursor/mcp.json to your .gitignore. If it leaks, revoke the token in the Mac app.
Does this cost extra?
